Matt Hall Opposes Defunding School Resource Officers

School resource officers play a critical role in school safety by building relationships with students and maintaining secure learning environments. Providing a school resource officer for every school district in Michigan is vital for protecting our children and supporting their education.

The 2023 budget proposed by the Democrats eliminated funding specifically allocated for school resource officers in Michigan school districts. They also tried to defund the School Safety and Mental Health Commission, which was established by Republicans in 2022 to coordinate safety and mental health services with schools statewide. The governor's latest budget proposal once again requests that the legislature defund this commission.

After the Oxford shooting, Republicans set up a bipartisan task force that heard from parents, law enforcement officers, mental health professionals, and educators. This task force then wrote a 13-bill legislative package intended to address the issues raised.

State Representative Matt Hall supports the proposed School Safety Legislation, which would offer grants for local school districts to hire school resource officers (SROs), standardize safety training in schools, require each school to have a current safety plan, and improve communication around school emergencies.
